#RLM – Have A Go Hero (Exquisite Pain)

Have a Go HeroI remember a couple of years back a time I visited a friend on the #AylesburyEstate in Elephant and Castle when the lift was broken seeing a junkie in the stairwell. Around Peckham, Elephant Camberwell there are a lot of foxes and What got me was how the crackhead acted exactly like a fox. He stopped, turned, looked at me, sae I wasn’t a threat and carried on – just like the foxes around here. I remember another time had left my bike locked up outside of the block and my friend was like ‘You should bring it up’. As was like nah it’ll be cool. When I came down it was still there but the lock was twisted like a curly wurly! I had to go back up, borrow a hammer and break the bike lock off. I never worried any police were gonna come and ask what I was doing – I was more concerned about the junkies. That and these stories you read in the news are what inspire this song. In the song as in life often there are no victors just victims

Exquisite Pain
(Lyrics by Yinka Oyewole):

Verse 1
You know it’s such exquisite pain, the thought that I won’t see you in this life again
The poetry of the slain whose words and deeds forever will remain
I never made it home to say how beautiful you looked on our special day
Because a sacrifice I made to save a life or did I just throw mine way
And now ask myself…

Chorus
Why I couldn’t let i go? Why I had to have a go?
Wind up some kind of hero. The kind my kids will never know

Verse 2
Now you could never call me brave, not champion of the saviour of the day
I mean I must have been insane, we had our anniversary to celebrate
But when I saw him grab her chain and punch the woman something went off in my brain
I never even felt the blade just my knees buckle as he ran way
And now I ask myself…

Chorus
Why I couldn’t let i go? Why I had to have a go?
Wind up some kind of hero. The kind my kids will never know

Bridge
Just to see you one more (I lay down my life)
Fell a victim (I laid down my life)
Not to hold you is the crime (I lay down)
See you on the other side (I laid down my life)

Verse 3
You know it’s such exquisite pain as I sit here being washed down by the rain
My blood’s a cocktail with champagne from the broken bottle trickling down the drain
I can’t hear a word they’re saying screaming faces quiet as the grave
I only got myself to blame – I just wanted you to be proud of my name
And now I ask myself

Chorus
Why I couldn’t let i go? Why I had to have a go?
Wind up some kind of hero. The kind my kids will never know
Why I couldn’t let i go? Why I had to have a go?
Wind up some kind of hero. The kind my kids will never know

Bridge
Just to see you one more (I lay down my life)
Fell a victim (I laid down my life)
Not to hold you is the crime (I lay down)
See you on the other side (I laid down my life)

I lay it down babe, I lay it down baby, I lay it down babe
I lay down my life
I’d do anything, anything just so see you again
I lay it down babe, I lay it down baby, I lay it down babe
I lay down my life
Lay down
