#RLM – EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES ‘It’s pantomime season, so let’s revisit this classic fairytale.’

Emperor's New Clothes - 2017In the fable The Emperor’s New Clothes a vain Emperor is so preoccupied with being resplendent in the finest robes and latest fashions that his rapacious vanity leaves not only him but his whole court and subjects open to con men prepared to take advantage of a trickle down culture of airs, graces and pretense. A pair of swindlers who convince the Emperor to purchase and wear an ‘invisible’ suit which neither him nor his courtiers will accept does not actually exist for fear of being seen as either stupid or unworthy of their positions. Finally in a parade where the Emperor unveils his magnificent new attire it is a small boy who is left to destroy the facade calling out ‘but he doesn’t have any clothes on’, the townsfolk break out in laughter but the Emperor – now feeling too far committed to his course of action continues his procession Canute style as if the tide of ridicule cannot reach him.

When I think of Brexit, I think of politicians committed to a course of action which may be some few have convinced themselves as having some merit but the vast majority are acutely aware is  folly. While the focal point of the tale is often identified as the revelation of monarch’s nudity the commitment to the keep up appearances is I feel the most telling and perennial element of the tale.

So although the song was written a long time prior to the Brexit vote it nevertheless still applies.

Emperor’s New Clothes
(Lyrics by Yinka Oyewole):
Verse 1
Fuck the fortune and the fame, To you it might seem strange
But they do this to keep me sane
It’s true and you make me…

Chrous
Cry!
The way you cheat and lie
To save your own skin, you wonder Why
You do, you do
The Emperor’s New Clothes don’t fit on my skin

Verse 2
So much trouble in the news, then suddenly it’s you
Pray to God the News don’t shoot
It’s true and you make me…

Chrous
Cry!
The way you cheat and lie
To save your own skin, you wonder Why
You do, you do
The Emperor’s New Clothes don’t fit on my skin

Bridge
Ever get the feeling, Life has lost it’s meaning
Gotta keep from screaming – Out Loud

Verse 3
You can’t cut your family ties, But what if your family lies
God know I empathise
It’s true and you make me…

Chorus
Cry! The way you cheat and lie to save your own skin,
You wonder Why. You do, you do. The Emperor’s New Clothes don’t fit on my skin

Bridge
Ever get the feeling, Life has lost it’s meaning
Gotta keep from screaming – Out Loud
Out Loud, Out Loud, Out Loud
Out Loud, Out Loud, Out Loud
